Introduction to gloves

A type of PPE (personal protective equipment) that protects a body from germs and certain chemicals in laboratories, hospitals, etc.

Historians described that a Rome princess wore the first glove in 100 B.C. But from the 13th century onwards, women of the palaces of different empires started to wear gloves as a beauty. In the 19th century, gloves were begun to use for surgical purposes. But it shapes special equipment in 2020 when an infection infected the whole world to stop spreading off infection from a person to another. Now, almost every person is wearing gloves to protect himself/herself from getting the disease.

Gloves are basically of 2 types. One is the exam, and the other one is surgical gloves.

Why use surgical gloves

Surgical gloves are used as a barrier to prevent the transmission of the infection between heath cares professionals and patients. Surgical gloves are of higher quality. They were first used in the 19th century and were of high accuracy.

But which surgical glove is the best to use?

Let’s look at different types of these gloves to choose the best one.

  1. Latex gloves
  2. Nitrile gloves

Latex gloves

Rubber trees produce latex which was used to manufacture the latex glove in 1964.

Latex gloves offer high-quality resilience against germs and are highly recommended in commercial and medical industries.

They are the most sensitive, elastic gloves. They also provide the best comfort for the users because they are made from natural resources.

There are two types of latex, i.e., powder and powder free gloves. Both have their pro and cons depending on which situation you are using these gloves.

Benefits » They provide the best resilience against allergies. But the disadvantage of these gloves is that you can’t use emollients before wearing these gloves because emollients weakened the gloves.

Nitrile gloves

Nitrile glove was first manufactured in the 1990s. These gloves are made from the chemicals produced in the laboratory. They are made from

  1. acrylonitrile                                                                 2. butadiene monomers

These materials give more chemical resistance than latex. These gloves are powder free. There is no concept of powdered material on nitrile gloves yet. The reason these gloves to be free from powder is that they are a laboratory material.

Nitrile gloves are now slowing down the latex gloves market because they offer much more resistance than latex gloves. They are not much sensitive and comfortable because of the low elasticity. But it can be improved with the mixing of latex. We can also use these gloves during surgical operations.

Difference between Latex gloves and nitrile gloves

Surgeons have a lot of confusion in choosing which glove is the best to use during surgical work. Other medical and commercial industries are also going through this not to get the infection in this pandemic. Here is the answer.

  •  Gloves nitrile are of much higher quality than gloves latex.
  • Nitrile gloves give much higher chemical resistance than latex gloves.
  • There is more chance to get allergies from others in latex gloves than nitrile gloves.
  • We produce nitrile gloves in the laboratory while latex glove is manufactured by latex obtained from rubber trees.
  • Nitrile gloves are free from powder, while some latex gloves have powder on one side of them to prevent toxic from sticking to your skin.

So, the answer is obvious. Nitrile gloves are better than the latex glove and are more recommended gloves during these pandemic days.

Sterile vs. non-sterile gloves

Sterile gloves are known as sterile because the manufacturer sterilizes them to meet the FDA’s standard. Non-sterile gloves are not sterilized but sterilized not heavily by the manufacturer to meet the FDA’s standard of sterilization techniques.

The main difference between these two is AQL. Sterile gloves have 1 % pinholes, while non-sterile gloves have 1.5 to 2.5 % of pinholes.  AQL (Acceptable quantity level) of sterile gloves is much higher than non-sterile ones.

That’s why sterile are much more recommended than non-sterile gloves.

Why use gloves in medical

Gloves are primarily used in medical industries for surgical purposes. Health care professionals should wear gloves because it acts as a barrier between the patient and healthcare professionals. During surgical work, a health care professional should wear gloves before touching the patient’s blood, skin, bodily fluids, etc., for his/her safety.
